According to the evaluation conducted by the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology, FUM has ranked first place among all Iranian universities in 2020-2021.
Dr. Ehsan Ghabool, Director of International Scientific and Academic Relations and International Student Affairs, regarding this great honor for FUM, states that the same as previous years, this evaluation and classification was carried out by the International Scientific Cooperation Studies Center of the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology (SRT). Numerous indicators in the field of science diplomacy and international academic cooperation are considered by this center for this important evaluation.
Dr. Ghabool noted that achieving this top rank refers to the balanced and comprehensive growth of scientific diplomacy in the university and the focus of the university's international management in recent years on admitting international students through implementing the existing agreements and memorandums on one hand and concluding operational contracts with high-rank universities in the region and the whole world on the other hand, especially in the field of international professors and attracting international funds.
He introduced FUM as the only university outside the capital that has achieved this rank and believed that there has been a leap in growth and development in recent years. He mentioned that this honor is achieved due to the efforts of all faculty members and students of the university and the efforts of international managers, faculties and staff in this field.

Announcement
Ferdowsi University of Mashhad (FUM) in a collaboration with International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) offers 2+1 years funded Master positions in Physics. This program is supported by Physics Without Frontiers (PWF) in ICTP and provides Master scholarships for students from Afghanistan. Qualified candidates, especially women, are encouraged to apply.
The Program’s Timeline:
The master program is 2+1 years and the students are expected to work full-time. The first three semesters will be coursework, and the rest will be focused on research. All students must submit a dissertation to the university based on their Master’s thesis to receive an MSc degree. The courses for each student depend on the student’s field. The deadline for applications is 2022/01/05 and the program is planned to start from the winter semester, February 2022.
Fields of study:
Each student will work in one the following fields: "Astrophysics, Gravitation and Cosmology", "Particle Physics and String Theory" or "Quantum Information".
Funds and support:
According to the agreement, FUM waives the tuition fee for the successful applicants of the PWF program. Also, FUM guarantees to provide food and dormitory rooms (at a very low price) to the accepted students. In addition, the PWF students will have access to The Information Center and Central Library, Health Center, Sport Complexes etc., similar to other FUM students. Moreover, the PWF students could use the faculty of science's Sci-cluster for their computations. PWF supports the living expenses in Mashhad.
Requirements:
1. Bachelor's degree in Physics which should be signed by the Afganistan's government.
2. Bachelor's Transcript (copy of applicant's academic record).
3. CV, including the applicant's study background, examinations, jobs, responsibilities, etc.
4. Two letters of recommendation.

In order to support and strengthen the academic strength of international students of TAFTASH Union member universities, the first round of virtual training workshops for international students was run by the International Academic and Scientific Relations and International Students Affairs of Ferdowsi University of Mashhad. The Workshop was free of charge and the participants were awarded a valid certificate. The event was well received by the international students in Iran, where specialized workshops were presented: SPSS software training and R software training by Dr. Hadi Jabbari Noghabi for 40 hours, proposal writing by Dr. Seyed Hadi Zarghani for 6 hours, and the how of publishing scientific articles in reputable journals and searching articles in authoritative scientific sources was presented by Dr. Aref Afshar Fard for 6 hours. The participants were international students from Ferdowsi University of Mashhad, University of Tehran, University of Isfahan, University of Shiraz, University of Tabriz, in October and November of 2020.

According to the Islamic World Science Citation Database (ISC), Ferdowsi University of Mashhad with a score of 89.12 was in second place in the internationalization of universities across the country. Compared to the previous ranking of this university, which was 5, and the small difference of FUM with the top university which scored 100, indicates that it has a well-written and workable plan to improve its quality. Undoubtedly, this honor is the result of the efforts of all family members of Ferdowsi University of Mashhad.
The most important international indicators studied in this ranking are:
International professors and researchers, international students, international exchange of student and faculty members, international publications, university membership in international conventions, joint international academic programs, joint international projects and grants, and participation in reputable international ranking systems.
The Islamic World Science Citation Database (ISC) started the evaluation and ranking of the Iranian universities and research institutes at the end of 2019 with the official announcement of the Minister of Science, Research and Technology. Although during the last 10 years, this ranking is done by the mentioned database, but as of 2020, the ranking and evaluation of public universities has been carried out under the supervision of the Ministry with new criteria and indicators, as well as a completely different methodology with full coordination and supervision of specialized working group at the Ministry. According to the results published by ISC, Ferdowsi University of Mashhad in the evaluation of 2019-2020, is among the top 10 comprehensive universities of the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology.
In the new ranking, due to the closeness of the universities' scores, the selection of ranking ranges instead of absolute rank has been considered in announcing the results. Also, ranking criteria has changed from five to six criteria including academic (weighing 30%), research (weighing 25%), technology and innovation (weighing 20%), internationalization (weighing 10%), economic impact (weighing 10%) and social services, infrastructure and facilities (weighing 5 percent). Based on this, Ferdowsi University of Mashhad has succeeded in obtaining the rank of 4 in the criterion of academic, 3 in the criterion of research, 2 in the criteria of technology & innovation and internationalization, 1 in the criterion of economic impact, and 5 in the criterion of social services, infrastructure and facilities.

The 5th Cultural Festival of Nations commenced in the presence of the Iranian Minister of Science, Research and Technology, the University Board of Directors, ambassadors of different countries and international students studying at Ferdowsi University of Mashhad (FUM) on Thursday morning, December 5, 2019.
Dr. Mansour Gholami, Minister of Science, Research and Technology, said that the festival is an opportunity for the acquaintance of different nations with each other's customs and culture and added: "This festival can lead to the closeness of the nations to each other and bring about scientific exchanges in this field". He considered the presence and study of various students from different countries of the world in Iran as a source of honor for Iran and acknowledged: “Iran has long been a cradle of science and knowledge and will make this country proud to be the oldest university and the first university in the world (Jundishapur University) to be registered in the name of Iran. Jundishapur University has been a place of scientific and international exchanges in its era, and today we are trying to continue to be one of the most important scientific centers in the world for scientific and cultural exchanges by hosting students from different countries.
The Minister of Science, Research and Technology considered the scientific position of Iranian universities in the national and international arenas as important and valuable and added: "Iran's universities and higher education centers have been able to achieve the world rank of 16th in terms of science in the world rankings in 2019, and according to predictions, Iran's position in the coming years will be improved, which is achieved through scientific and research and the achievements of scientists and academics. At present, Iran has been able to rank among the top rankings in the world in modern fields of study such as biotechnology, nanotechnology, aerospace, stem cells and various fields of basic sciences, and this shows that Iranian universities are both scientifically and culturally a great place for students around the world to research and study.
Dr. Gholami expressed hope that different universities in the country, such as Ferdowsi University of Mashhad, can increase their scientific diplomacy and host international students from different nations of the world and make Iran's name and its scientific status more visible in the world.
At the opening of the festival, Prof. Mohammad Kafi, President of Ferdowsi University of Mashhad, welcomed the guests and said that the presence of over 2,000 international students and language learners from more than 25 countries is a source of honor and pride for the university. The city of Mashhad, due to the presence of the holy shrine of Ali Ibn Musa Al-Reza (AS) and Ferdowsi the Great, needs to find its deserving place; Ferdowsi University of Mashhad finds it incumbent upon itself to work hard and persevere in increasing its national and international status and be a source of pride for Khorasan and Iran.
The President of Ferdowsi University of Mashhad considered the presence of international students from different parts of the world in Ferdowsi University of Mashhad to increase the scientific and cultural exchanges of nations and acknowledged that: after graduating from Ferdowsi University of Mashhad and other Iranian universities, each of these students become scientific and cultural ambassadors for Iran in their country, and it is necessary for other Iranian universities, such as Ferdowsi University of Mashhad, to increase their scientific and cultural diplomacy, help Iranian science and knowledge and Iran's rich culture to be recognized by the world, and create a good name for Iran in different countries of the world.
The fifth cultural festival of nations, with the presence of more than 2000 students and language learners from 29 countries, and the establishment of cultural booths and display of customs, traditions and culture of different countries at the northern door of Ferdowsi University of Mashhad is open until December 7 and academic and non-academic enthusiasts are welcome to visit.
